Apple Dumplings made approachable with clear cues, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup water

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them into quarters.
  3. Mix sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Sprinkle this mixture over the apple quarters.
  4. Unroll the pie crusts on a clean surface and cut each crust into quarters.
  5. Place a quarter apple onto each pie crust piece, then fold the crust around the apple and seal it tightly.
  6. Arrange the wrapped apples in a baking dish and set aside.
  7. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat; then stir in water and remaining sugar to create a syrup.
  8. Pour the syrup over the arranged dumplings in the baking dish.
  9. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the apples are tender.
  10. Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving; drizzle with leftover syrup if desired.
